From Log to Bowl
Below is a series of images showing the making of a bowl from an Elm log sourced from the Black Isle near Inverness. The turning process revealed a burr which can be seen as a lump on the original log. In this case I decided to feature the chaotic burr patterns in the bottom of the bowl. As the pith – which is the centre of the tree - is close to the top of the bowl on opposing sides they are a point of weakness and already there is a sign of cracking. Fingers crossed in the drying process these cracks don’t open up much more!
